As we celebrate DSP Recognition Week, we’re proud to shine a spotlight on Christopher Velez, a dedicated Direct Support Professional at The Institutes of Applied Human Dynamics (IAHD). Christopher embodies the qualities that make DSPs so essential: patience, creativity, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to the people he supports.
For Christopher, the greatest motivation comes from the individuals he works with every day. “Supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities gives me purpose because I know that every interaction, no matter how small, can make a difference in someone’s life,” he shares. Witnessing progress, independence, and moments of joy inspires him to show up fully, advocating, celebrating achievements, and pushing himself to bring his best.
Outside of work, Christopher finds balance through both nature and creativity. He loves hiking and exploring new trails, which helps him recharge and stay grounded. He’s also a talented nail technician, enjoying the artistry of creating designs that make others feel good about themselves – a unique expression of his passion for both care and creativity.
Christopher’s advice to fellow DSPs is simple yet profound: “Be patient, flexible, and open-minded. Take time to understand each person’s unique needs, celebrate small wins, and always lead with kindness and respect.”
He recalls one moment when his quick thinking and teamwork made a big difference. After noticing that an individual had developed a painful sunburn and was feeling very anxious, Christopher called StationMD for support. The doctors were able to assess the situation virtually, reassure the individual, and explain the importance of sunscreen. What began as a moment of fear became a calm, teachable experience – and showing how teamwork and accessible medical care can make a real impact.
Christopher’s team at IAHD describe him as professional, autonomous, and collaborative; these are qualities that shine through in his daily work. They’ve stated he plays a vital role in ensuring smooth medical system oversight at his residence, working seamlessly with providers, nurses, and advocates. His proactive approach, positive outlook, and commitment to person-centered care create an environment of trust, respect, and high-quality support.
It is our honor to feature Christopher Velez in the StationMD DSP Spotlight Series during this special week of recognition. His dedication reminds us of the profound difference DSPs make – not just in healthcare, but in the lives and futures of the people they support.
