Telehealth services are now available on the Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) waiver, aiming to improve healthcare access across the state of Ohio.
CLEVELAND, OH – January 1, 2025 – StationMD, a telehealth service specializing in supporting individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (I/DD), is now offering 24/7 health care assessment access for Ohio residents under the Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) waivers. The service is authorized on the Ohio Individual Service Plan (OhioISP), providing a much-needed healthcare option for individuals with I/DD and their caregivers across the state.
As of January 1, 2025, Ohioans on the Individual Options Waiver, SELF Waiver, and Level One Waiver can enroll in StationMD’s specialized health care assessment services. StationMD offers immediate access to board-certified clinicians specially trained to provide care for individuals with I/DD, helping to reduce unnecessary emergency room visits, hospitalizations, and disruptions to daily routines.
A recently concluded report by The Ohio State University Nisonger Center highlights the success of the Ohio StationMD Pilot Program (2022–2024), implemented in partnership with the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities (DODD). The program enrolled 5,229 individuals across 77 Ohio counties. Engaged users made 1,010 telehealth calls, 89% of which were resolved without requiring emergency department (ED) visits or transfers. For necessary ED transfers, StationMD provided pre-arrival coordination, reducing wait times and improving patient outcomes.
92% of DSPs reported reduced stress in their jobs due to StationMD, while 88% found the service easy to use. Participants reported improved confidence in care, fewer daily disruptions, and easier prescription access. A caregiver noted, “StationMD keeps emergency room visits to a minimum and brings peace of mind to families.” Lead researcher Dr. Marc J. Tassé stated, “This pilot program underscores the critical role telemedicine can play in reducing healthcare disparities and improving outcomes for people with I/DD.”
